This Friday we’re discussing how to pair a science experiment with an important lesson in self-awareness —the ability to notice what’s happening inside our own bodies, minds, and emotions.

Think about it: we can’t regulate what we don’t recognize.

If we don’t realize our energy is skyrocketing, we can’t take a break before the crash.

If we don’t notice we’re low and sluggish, we can’t make a plan to boost our energy before starting on an important task.

Self-awareness is also the first step toward positive perspective-taking. Once kids can read their own “inner weather,” they’re better equipped to understand what other’s might be experiencing.

That’s how healthy relationships are built —learning to recognize, manage, and respect both our own experiences and the experiences of others.

This week’s science experiment is a great way to start the conversation. Inside each of us, things can feel calm one moment, then bubbly and bouncy the next. Sometimes we’re slow and heavy, other times we fizz with energy.

And just like in this experiment, we can see those shifts more clearly when they’re made visible.
